Island of the Blue Dolphins

We have started our second novel of the year in Room 17! We are reading Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell. It has been a wonderful read so far. The students are really enjoying it. We are able to make a ton of connections living so close to the coast and Karana’s experiences on the island. We have also been enjoying the figurative language!

O’Dell does a great job painting extremely vivid pictures for our imagination.

We worked on a fun project yesterday regarding connecting to our main character, Karana. The students were asked how they personally connected to the main character. I also gave them the opportunity to draw a “selfie” of themselves and Karana as if they were in modern times! I wanted to see each student's interpretation of our main character. They had a lot of fun connecting and creating!
